So you've decided you would like to have a baby! What
an exciting (and life changing) decision you've made!
You should start planning about 3 months before you
actually start trying to conceive (TTC). This will help
you make any basic changes in your lifestyle that may
be needed. You should try to stop smoking now, (if you
smoke) and should limit (or avoid) alcohol consumption.
Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your plans.
They can prescribe prenatal vitamins for you, as well as
discuss any medications you are taking, or should avoid.
He/She can also discuss whether or not you need an updated
rubella vaccination. You also want to ask about Folic Acid
supplements. Folic Acid has been found to help prevent neural
tube defects, such as spina bifida, in unborn babies. The first
12 weeks are very important in baby's organs and body system
development. Since many women don't realize they are pregnant
until about 6 weeks, it's recommended you begin Folic Acid
while still TTC.
It's important that you remember diet and exercise too.
Be sure your diet contains the recommended daily amounts
of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, mineral, and vitamins.
These will all be essential you your baby's well being once
you become pregnant.
