Maca root is a naturally occurring herb that is thought to help women regulate hormones. Native Peruvians use Maca for many purposes, including promoting mental clarity, increasing libido, overcoming fatigue and to treat menstrual irregularities and hormonal imbalances. Some physicians may recommend Maca as an alternative or as a precursor to hormone replacement therapy. Maca does not cause the ovaries to atrophy as conventional hormone replacement therapy does. Rather, Maca root is believe to regulate the function of the ovaries.
Maca root is not a hormone itself. However, it is believed to jog the pituitary gland into producing the hormones that help raise estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels. It is also thought to help balance the adrenal and thyroid glands, as well as the pancreas.
While Maca is often recommended after menopause, starting a Maca root regimen before menopause may help the endocrine system to stay in balance and make transition into menopause. As with any medication or supplement, you should discuss Maca root with your physician before beginning a regular regimen.
