Is It Safe To Run While Pregnant?

Yes, it is safe to run while you are pregnant.  There are many athletes who have not only ran, but competed while they were pregnant.  Running is probably not a sport you’ll want to start while you are pregnant, but if you already are fit and healthy and are having a normal pregnancy it’s not a problem for you to continue running.

A lot of women find that after their first trimester running is not very comfortable because of the additional strain on the abdominal muscles. One study showed that on average women decreased their running by 30-40% during the second trimester and 70% less during their third trimester.  You may find that you’ll decrease your running as you get further along naturally, because you will get tired faster and your endurance is generally lower.

Your body is already working harder than usual when you are pregnant, so be sure and keep close tabs on your respiratory and heart rate not only while you run, but during all vigorous exercise.  Listen to your body and don’t push yourself too hard.   Don’t forget to stay hydrated – drink plenty of water!
