Prenatal Test - Amniocentesis - How long until I get the results
Amniocentesis is a prenatal test that is usually performed during weeks 15 to 18 of pregnancy. This test takes some time to read the results and waiting can be very difficult when you are waiting to find out about the health of your unborn baby. Depending on what your doctor is looking for you may wait up to two weeks.
This is the general guideline for the timeline of results from Amniocentesis:
Amniotic fluid AFP (AF-AFP) results: 1-2 days
Fetal Rh genotype: 1-2 days
Assay for acetylcholine esterase (AchE): 4-5 days
Fetal karyotype: 7-10 days
Although it will be difficult, try to keep your mind on other things while you await the results of your testing. Keeping busy at work or with hobbies can help pass the time. You may want to visit with friends, or make a trip to a local salon for a day of pampering.
If it is past the time your doctor tells you to expect to wait for the results do not hesitate to call and ask for the results. However, calling before the results are due back will not hurry things along. These tests are sent out to labs for readings and the doctors office must wait to receive these back after the studies and reports are completed.
