Progesterone is a hormone that naturally occurs in your body. It’s an important component of your reproductive system, and it plays a role in things like ovulation. During pregnancy, stable progesterone levels are important in helping to insure that you don’t have certain types of complications. For some women, low levels of progesterone during pregnancy can cause a number of problems.
Here are some of the common symptoms of having low progesterone levels during the first trimester of pregnancy:
- Fatigue. Feeling tired or fatigued during pregnancy is pretty normal. However, if it’s happening all of the time, you may have low progesterone levels. If you’re tired even after having had a full night of sleep, you might consider having your health care provider check your progesterone levels.
- Low blood sugar. If you feel light-headed, sweaty and weak, it can bea sign of low blood sugar. Low blood sugar, in turn, can be caused by low progesterone levels during the first trimester. You can help to prevent low blood sugar by eating a balanced diet, and by eating at regular intervals to help make sure that your glucose levels don’t fall too low.
- Tenderness of the breast. It’s common for a woman to have tender breasts during late pregnancy because the body is getting ready for breast feeding. However,if your breasts are constantly sore during the first trimester, it may be a sign that you have low progesterone levels.
- Vaginal dryness. Progesterone plays a role in the body’s production of fluids, including vaginal secretions. If you’re experiencing vaginal dryness that is uncomfortable, it could be that you’ve had a drop in your progesterone levels.
- Spotting. A small amount of spotting can be normal during pregnancy. (Heavy spotting is not normal, of course, and requires immediate medical attention.) Low progesterone levels during the first trimester can cause light spotting, and any spotting should be reported to your doctor.
- Mood and memory. Sometimes, having low progesterone levels during the first trimester can cause mood issues, such as depression. In other cases, it can lead to panic attacks. For some women, it can be a contributing factor to memory loss.
