My Pregnancy Test was Positive, Now What?

Congratulations!  You’ve had a positive pregnancy test.  Hopefully, you were expecting that this would happen.  Even if not, finding out that you are pregnant can still be a very happy and exciting time.  After all, how could it not be?  You’re going to have a baby!  Still, the emotions that surround a positive pregnancy test can sometimes be so overwhelming that it is hard to figure out what exactly to do now.

There are some things that you will want to do right away.  You should, after having a positive pregnancy test, schedule an appointment with your health care provider.  You will want to do this for several reasons.  First, you will want to confirm your pregnancy.  While most pregnancy tests are very reliable, there is still the possibility that a pregnancy test might give an incorrect reading.  The best way to confirm pregnancy is to see your health care provider.  Many providers will want you to wait until you’ve missed two full periods, while others will likely have you come in right away.

It’s never too early to start learning all you can about pregnancy.  Even if you’ve had a baby before, you should start brushing up on the things you should do and the things that you should avoid for a healthy and successful pregnancy.  While you don’t need to sign up for childbirth classes just yet, it doesn’t hurt to start reading.

As far as telling people you are pregnant after a positive pregnancy test, this is completely up to you.  Many women choose to wait a while, until they’ve seen their health care provider at least, until announcing the good news to others.  You should let the baby’s father know as soon as you are able, however, as it is his child as well.

Finally, you should take a few moments to yourself to just reflect.  What is happening inside your body is at once common and thoroughly miraculous.  Celebrate the blessing that you have and the wonderful journey you are about to take.
