Is Valium safe to take while pregnant?

By : Sophia Levis

Valium, also known as diazepam, is a medication often used to relieve anxiety, nervousness and tension stemming from anxiety disorders.  Valium is also sometimes used as an anti-seizure medicine.  Valium is typically proscribed for a short amount of time, as it is severely addictive.

Valium comes from a family of medicines known as benzodiazepines.  Several studies have been done that indicate that benzodiazepines may lead to an increased risk of birth defects.   Benzodiazepines are not only addictive to the mother, but may be addictive to her baby.  After birth a newborn may have withdrawal symptoms such as breathing problems, poor body temperature control, poor muscle tone, and difficult sucking.  Benzodiazepines can also lead to "floppy baby syndrome" in which a baby can appear floppy or limp and this poor muscle tone can last for a number of months.

If you have been prescribed Valium and become pregnant, you should speak with your physician immediately to discuss an alternate form of treatment.
