Food Warnings During Pregnancy
Once you get past your first trimester morning sickness (if you are one of the lucky ones!) you will find you spend much of your day battling strange pregnancy cravings. This of course is just par for the course, and for the most part it is fine to give in to your cravings providing you are still eating sensibly. There are a small handful of foods you should avoid, but as always, consult with your doctor or midwife if you have any questions or concerns.
Foods to avoid when pregnant:
Shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish - the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns pregnant women to avoid fish that have high mercury levels.
Raw or undercooked fish or meats - Raw meat, chicken, and fish can be contaminated by salmonella and other disease-carrying bacteria.
Raw Egg – may be contaminated with salmonella.
Soft cheeses and unpasteurized milk and juices - Can also cause Listeria.
Use caution when pregnant:
Deli meats - Deli meats can be contaminated with the bacteria that cause Listeria, a potentially deadly infection that can cross to the placenta and sicken your baby. Cook deli meats (including hotdogs) until they reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees.
Liver – Due to the high levels of Vitamin A, limit your consumption of liver.
Caffeine - the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) feel that there is no harm in drinking a cup or two of coffee or other caffeinated beverages per day during pregnancy.
Herbal teas and remedies - Always consult with your doctor or midwife before taking any herbal remedies.
