Pregnancy can be a stressful time. Hormonal changes combined with the crashing sense of reality involved in having a baby can have you feeling happy, sad and scared—all at the same time. While these feelings are normal, it is important to be aware of your stress and manage it effectively. Studies have even shown that very high levels of stress may contribute to preterm birth or low birthweight in full-term babies, or other complications during pregnancy.
Some things you can do to deal with stress:
- Eat a regular, well-balanced diet.
- Exercise regularly.
- Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
- Rest when you can and when your body tells you to.
- Meditate.
- Use biofeedback.
- Listen to music.
- Write in a journal.
- Avoid stressful people and situations.
- Talk to your partner about your feelings.
- Talk to a counselor or mental health professional.
