The sciatic nerve, which provides sensory and motor function to the lower extremities, is the largest nerve in the body. It provides sensation from the sole of the foot up through the back of the thigh. Sciatic nerve pain is a periodic sever pain that occurs through this nerve area. Sciatic nerve pain is often referred to as Sciatica.
Your sciatic nerve runs under your uterus to your legs. While you are pregnant, the uterus causes pressure on this nerve, particularly in late pregnancy as your baby grows bigger and bigger.
Treatment options for Sciatica include:
- bed rest on a firm mattress for one or two days
- use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication
- physical therapy
You may find temporary relief from the symptoms of sciatica simply by changing position. Many women find that laying on their side, opposite of the pain, will relieve their sciatica. Applying a heat or cold compress or bending into a knee-to-chest position may also help. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may also be used.
Sciatica caused by pregnancy usually disappears after childbirth.
