Can I get pregnant if I have sex during my menstrual period?

Pregnancy can occur anytime that sperm gets into the vagina or on the vulva.  It is possible, albeit rare, for a woman to become pregnant during her period.  This most often occurs if she has a menstrual cycle that is less than 22 days.

It is important also to realize that not all vaginal bleeding is the result of a menstrual period.  Some women may even bleed during the actual time of ovulation.  In some cases, this ovulation bleeding may even begin before or right as a menstrual period has stopped. 

Each woman is, of course different.  The chances of becoming pregnant are typically very rare during the woman's period.  The chances from there are even less during the onset of a woman's period.  However, the truth is that there is no predictable time during the month when the risk of pregnancy can be said to be absent.
