What is a threatened miscarriage?

What is a threatened miscarriage?

Any time there is vaginal bleeding during early pregnancy, or the first trimester, it is considered a threatened miscarriage.  This bleeding may or may not occur with cramping.  Most of these pregnancies result in a full term pregnancy with less than 30% ending in a miscarriage.

Bleeding and pain that happen during threatened miscarriage are usually mild and the cervical OS remains closed.  Most women do not pass tissue during a threatened miscarriage.  You may have some pain and tenderness in the abdomen when you have a threatened miscarriage.

Up to 20% of pregnant women will experience some vaginal bleeding during their first trimester.  Be sure and consult with your doctor or midwife if you have any vaginal bleeding during your pregnancy.

Each pregnancy, expectant mother, and unborn child is different. Your pregnancy may not progress the same as the information found here. The information here is based on the average pregnancy. It's not meant to be a replacement for any advice your may receive from your doctor. If you have any concerns about your pregnancy, we advise you to contact your doctor.
