Fifth Disease and Pregnancy

By : Sophia Levis

Fifth disease is a mild rash illness that occurs most often in children.  Also known as erythema infectiosum, is called by something called Parovirus B19.  Fifth disease is most often recognized by a rash on the face and on the trunk and limbs.  It may be accompanied by joint pain and/or swelling.

Most of the time, if a pregnant woman gets Fifth Disease, the unborn child is unaffected.  In rare circumstances, however, the child may be.  If this happens, the virus can disrupt the ability of the baby to produce red blood cells, which will lead to anemia, heart complications and even death.

There is no vaccine or medicine that prevents Parovirus B19 infection.  If you are pregnant and unsure of your immune status, you can help protect yourself from infection by:
-  Washing your hands thoroughly and often, especially after touching tissues used by children who might be infected
-  Not sharing drinking glasses and utensils with any one who has or was exposed to the illness
-  If you think you have been exposed to fifth disease, call your health care provider right away.

Many physicians will view Parovirus B19 as a low-risk condition and monitor your condition.  Others may increase physician visits and perform blood tests and untrasounds to keep tabs on the baby.  If the unborn baby appears to be ill, there are special diagnostic and treatment options available, and your obstetrician will discuss these options with you and their potential benefits and risks.

Each pregnancy, expectant mother, and unborn child is different. Your pregnancy may not progress the same as the information found here. The information here is based on the average pregnancy. It's not meant to be a replacement for any advice your may receive from your doctor. If you have any concerns about your pregnancy, we advise you to contact your doctor.
