Yeast infections can be very common during pregnancy because of the changes that your body is going through. Changes in your hormone levels can change the environment in your vagina. Yeast infections are not dangerous during your pregnancy, but they are very uncomfortable and you should talk with your doctor as soon as you suspect that you may have a yeast infection.
A yeast infection happens with the chemical balance in the vagina are out of balance and yeast grows out of control. This causes an uncomfortable itching and burning sensation. During a yeast infection you may notice a large amount of white, greenish or yellowish discharge, redness, itching or irritation of the lips of the vagina, discomfort or burning during urination or intercourse. If you have never had a yeast infection before be sure and visit your doctor to confirm that you have a yeast infection.
The oral medication that is often used for treating yeast infections, Diflucan, has not been approved for use during pregnancy. Most doctors will suggest the use of suppositories and creams during your pregnancy. It may take several days for your infection to clear up, but you should check with your doctor if you haven’t had any improvement within three days or if your condition worsens while you are treating the infection. After the infection has gone away it can be helpful to use drying powder (starch free), or Nystatin powder to help prevent further infections.
