What is a sonohystogram and why is it performed?

By : Sophia Levis

A sonohystogram is an ultrasound procedure which uses no radiation.  It is used to better visualize the inside of the uterus and endometrium.  Most often it is used to view fibroids and polyps, or any other abnormalities of the uterine cavity that could interfere with pregnancy.

Fibroids are usually found by your doctor during a routine physical examination.  A pelvic exam allows a physician to feel the size and shape of the uterus.  If the uterus is enlarged or irregularly shaped, fibroids may be present.

A sonohystogram takes around 30 minutes.  During a sonohystogram you are positioned similar to a gynecological exam and cleaned with an antibacterial soap.l  A catheter is inserted through the cervix, and a small inflated balloon holds it in place.  Saline is injected into the uterus and ultrasound pictures are then obtained.  The procedure may cause some cramping in the abdomen, and these may last for a while after the sonohystogram.

Each pregnancy, expectant mother, and unborn child is different. Your pregnancy may not progress the same as the information found here. The information here is based on the average pregnancy. It's not meant to be a replacement for any advice your may receive from your doctor. If you have any concerns about your pregnancy, we advise you to contact your doctor.
