Back pain is fairly common during pregnancy. However, it should still be addressed as soon as possible. Back pain during pregnancy can cause a variety of difficulties. In addition to the pain itself, it can cause you to miss time from work, make your delivery more difficult, and even cause problems after delivery.
There are several things you can do to help manage back pain during pregnancy:
- Maintain proper posture. This will eliminate the largest majority of back pain causes.
- Maintain an appropriate exercise program that includes lots of stretching.
- Sit up from laying down by rolling on your side and using your arms to push yourself up.
- Make sure you are getting sufficient rest so that your body can be at its best.
- Sleep on your side with a pillow between your legs.
- Purchase a maternity support belt to give your back muscles some additional help.
- Ask your doctor about using a "TENS" machine. These machines electrically stimulate your muscles to make them stronger or weaker as needed for pain.
There are a variety of professionals you can see to assist you with back pain, including:
- Your physician.
- A Chiropractor.
- An Osteopath.
- An Acupuncturist or Acupressurist.
These practitioners will assess the cause of your back pain in pregnancy and the treatment will vary depending on the cause. You should always run any treatment past your physician first.
