Acupuncture is a practice found in both western and eastern medicine. It is estimated that Americans visit acupuncturists more than five million times a year. Many doctors, dentists and other practitioners are encouraging acupuncture to treat or prevent many illnesses. As always, if you are considering acupuncture during pregnancy you should speak at length with your physician.
Advocates of acupuncture treatment suggest that acupuncture during pregnancy benefits both Baby and Mother. Treatments are typically given monthly until the last month of pregnancy, when the frequency of sessions is increased to help prepare for labor, A typical session lasts 45 minutes, and is relatively pain free.
During the first trimester, acupuncture or acupressure may reduce morning sickness, fatigue, migraines and bleeding. During the second trimester, acupuncture can help maintain balance, alleviate heartburn, hemorrhoids and stress. Third-trimester benefits can include much-needed relief from sciatica, backache, pubic and joint pain and even carpal tunnel syndrome, and benefits are sometimes immediate. In the last four to six weeks, the mother will receive treatments to normalize and optimize labor. Acupuncture is used during labor itself mainly to facilitate pain relief and boost energy.
