Weight Loss in Pregnancy - Causes and when it is of concern
Weight loss in pregnancy is most often caused by nausea and vomiting (commonly referred to morning sickness). This usually occurs between weeks 6-16, although for some women it lasts for longer periods of time. It is often believed that the changing hormones in your body cause morning sickness.
It is difficult to completely relieve the symptoms of morning sickness, but there are ways to help minimize the symptoms. Try eating small, frequent meals. You can also try eating a piece of bread or some saltine crackers before you get out of bed. Often greasy foods and strong odors will trigger some cases of nausea as well, so try to avoid these things. If you are completely unable to keep down solid foods, or if you become dehydrated your doctor will probably give you a medication to help control the vomiting. A small amount of weight loss reasonable; however, if you have severe weight loss or any signs of dehydration you’ll need to speak with your doctor or midwife.
