Abdominal exercises during pregnancy - should they be done?
Generally speaking, while you are pregnant, it’s probably best to avoid the commonly known abdominal exercises, such as sit-ups, crunches and leg lifts. Lying on your back can restrict the blood and oxygen flow to your uterus, thus restricting the flow to the baby. Also, scrunching up the abdomen could be uncomfortable and cause injury to your unborn baby.
There are other activities that you can do while you are pregnant to help yourself stay fit while you are pregnant. Exercising is a great way to help monitor how much weight you gain, help your labor go smoothly and help you stay fit and healthy while you are pregnant.
Check with your doctor before you begin any new exercise routine, but here is a list of good activities to help you stay fit while you are pregnant.
- Walking
- Swimming
- Stretching
- Golf
- Frisbee
- Tennis
- Floor exercises
- Yoga
- Bowling
- Stationary cycling
As you can see, staying fit can be fun, too! Overall, you’ll feel better and stay healthier if you engage in a variety of exercise while you are pregnant.
