Working the Core During Early Pregnancy

Exercise, in general, is an important part of your pregnancy. During the first trimester of pregnancy, however, you will need to begin to slightly adjust your exercise routine. While most exercise is perfectly safe and does not present any problem whatsoever during pregnancy, there are certain exercises that you should just not do during pregnancy. Still, abdominal exercises are not generally considered to be unsafe during the first trimester.

During he first trimester of pregnancy, you should pretty much continue any sort of exercise routine that you had before becoming pregnant. If you didn’t follow an exercise routine, the first trimester is a fine time to begin. Of course, you should always contact your health care provider before you start an exercise routine, whether it is during the first trimester of pregnancy or whether it is at another time.

The categories of exercises that are considered not safe during pregnancy are those that pose a threat of direct impact on the abdomen. Contact sports, for example, should be avoided. Skiing should be avoided, as well. Any sort of exercise that poses a risk of falling or trauma to your abdomen should be avoided, as well. Abdominal exercises, however, do not fall into this category. In general, during the first trimester, there is no position that you can put your body in that will not be safe for you and for your developing baby.

After the first trimester of pregnancy, as you get into the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, abdominal exercises are still generally considered safe. However, as your baby grows and continues to change your shape and your center of gravity, it may become much more physically difficult, if not nearly impossible, for you to do abdominal exercises. The important thing is that you listen to your body, and know what your body’s limits are. You should not overexert yourself, whether or not you are doing abdominal exercises, during pregnancy.

Finally, you should always talk to your health care provider about any exercise routine during your first trimester, or even later in pregnancy. There may be specific factors related to your situation that may indeed make certain types of exercises unsafe.
