The Right Amount of Pregnancy Weight

The fact of the matter is that there’s no hard and fast answer to the question of pregnancy weight gain. There are a number of important factors that go into determining how much weight you should gain during pregnancy. One of the most important factors, of course, is your pre-pregnancy weight, but there are other things – such as blood pressure or your own particular physiology – that may affect pregnancy weight gain as well.

That being said, there are some general guidelines you should follow when it comes to pregnancy weight gain. Pregnancy weight gain guidelines are based on your BMI, or your Body Mass Index. BMI is a measurement that has to do with the ratio of your height to your weight.

A healthy BMI is considered to be in the 18.5 to 24.9 range. If you fall into that range, then you should expect to gain between 25 and 35 pounds during a healthy pregnancy. As you can see, the range is still considerable, even for women with a similar BMI. You will probably gain anywhere from one to five pounds during your first trimester, and then you’ll gain about a pound a week for the remainder of your pregnancy.

For women who have a lower BMI – that is, a BMI that falls below 18.5 – you should hope to gain more weight while you are pregnant. Usually, you’re going to want to gain between 28 and 40 pounds during your pregnancy. Overweight women, which are those with a BMI between 25 and 29.9, should gain between 15 and 25 pounds. Women who are obese – with a BMI over 30 – should still plan on gaining some weight during their pregnancy (around 11 to 20 pounds).

Women that are going to have twins will need to gain more weight during pregnancy. A healthy woman should expect to gain between 37 and 54 pounds with twins. An overweight woman should gain between 31 and 50 pounds, and even an obese woman should gain between 25 and 42 pounds.

Ultimately, the message here is this: pregnancy weight gain will vary, and it’s never considered healthy to lose weight during your pregnancy, no matter how much you weighed before you became pregnant.
