Acupuncture has been used for centuries as a method to help with a variety of physical conditions. Pregnancy is no exception. More and more, today’s women are realizing the merits in ancient treatments such as acupuncture during pregnancy. This is even caught on among some famous people, including pop star Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas.

37-year-old Stacy Ann Ferguson, who goes by the stage name Fergie, told good morning America that she is using acupuncture to help reduce the intensity of her morning sickness.

Here are some things that you should know if you’re thinking about having acupuncture during pregnancy:

  • Acupuncture is a supplemental treatment. It isn’t meant to be a substitute for medical care. It’s complementary, and designed to help what your healthcare provider is doing to ensure that you have a safe and healthy pregnancy.
  • Acupuncture today is based on medical and safety standards. It’s important that you trust your care to a licensed acupuncture practitioner, in order to ensure that they are using the correct procedures for safety and sterility during your pregnancy.
  • There are a number of pregnancy related issues acupuncture may be able to help. Some of the most common include morning sickness, pain in the hips and lower back, stress, mild depression and it is even thought to help speed along the labor process.
  • In some cases, acupuncture may help with fertility, as well. There are some studies that show acupuncture can help increase the effectiveness of some assisted reproductive technologies.
  • There is no evidence to suggest that acupuncture presents any danger during pregnancy. Studies have been done to examine whether acupuncture could cause problems such as miscarriage, stillbirth, problems that center, preeclampsia, premature birth or even developmental issues. To date, none of these problems have ever been connected with acupuncture.

The most important thing, of course, is to find and I can puncture us to who is licensed and who will take the greatest care for you during your pregnancy. If you have concerns, you should check with your healthcare provider, as well, to make sure there aren’t any specific conditions that would prevent you from being candidate for acupuncture.
