Most women will have some degree or another of pain in their back during pregnancy. Whether it’s a matter of mild discomfort or whether it’s so debilitating that it interferes with your daily activities, it’s just one of those things that tends to come along with being pregnant. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to help minimize pregnancy back pain.
Here are some things you can do to help lessen the severity and the frequency of pregnancy back pain:
- Do back-strengthening exercises. There are a number of exercises you can do that will help to strengthen those back muscles, as well as the abdominal muscles that play a role in back pain. Talk to your doctor if you’re not sure what kind of exercises would be helpful.
- Don’t bend. Instead of bending over to pick things up, you should squat in order to minimize strain on your back.
- Wear the right shoes. You’ll want to wear shoes that provide plenty of support, so stay away from high heels and unsupportive shoes.
- Sleep on your side. Most women find that sleeping on their side with a pillow between their legs can help lessen pregnancy back pain.
- Consider visiting a chiropractor. There are even chiropractors that specialize in treating pregnant women. At the very least, choose one that has experience with pregnancy.
- Get your rest. Make sure to get enough sleep, and to relax when possible. Sitting down with your feet elevated can help to alleviate pressure on the back, too.
When it comes to treating pregnancy back pain, you need to keep some things in mind, as well. Talk to your doctor about which medications might be appropriate for you to use. There are some anti-inflammatory medications considered safe for pregnancy, while others aren’t. consider using ice or heat. In some cases, treating pregnancy back pain may involve a support device or a brace, as well.
