Pregnancy can be a wonderful experience. Unfortunately, though, when we’re pregnant, most of us find ourselves dealing with symptoms like back pain, sciatica, nausea, and high blood pressure while at the same time having to be very careful about what kinds of medication we take. In recent years, this has led many to seek alternative therapies such as:
- Massage therapy
- Chiropractic treatment
A recent study considered the use of alternative medical treatments on pregnant women in Australia. Of over 1,800 women interviewed, roughly half had sought some form of alternative treatment.
The most common pregnancy symptom treated with alternative therapies is back pain. Women who experience back pain during pregnancy found relief in chiropractic care, acupuncture and massage therapy. Women suffering from neck and hip pain were also likely to seek help from a massage therapist or chiropractor.
Morning sickness is another pregnancy symptom which many women treat with alternative therapies. Many have claimed that aromatherapy, acupressure, and naturopathy have helped ease nausea symptoms. These alternative therapies are generally considered safe and can often be used without professional aid.
Alternative therapies have also been used to treat depression during and after pregnancy (prepartum and postpartum depression). Studies conducted by the University of Michigan have shown that yoga helps reduce stress and depression in pregnant women. Many claim that aromatherapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy and acupuncture are also helpful for depression symptoms.
It’s always a good idea to check with your health care professional before beginning any kind of treatment-alternative or otherwise-while you are pregnant. Most medical professionals today are open to the treatment possibilities available to you through alternative medicines. Your doctor may even have suggestions of alternative therapies you can try for your pregnancy symptoms.
In the nine months we spend waiting for baby to make her grand appearance, many of us are willing to try almost anything to relieve our pregnancy symptoms. Alternative medicine can help relieve many of the symptoms of pregnancy without the need for medications which could be harmful to you and your baby.
Have you tried any alternative therapies during your pregnancy? What kind of results did you experience?
