Boston in the Spring

The United States is a big place, and there are many factors to consider when picking the right place to settle down. Deciding the best spot to raise a child can make the decision even more difficult. There are many places in the country that are perfect for starting a family, but there are a few cities that stand out with their excellent health care, affordable living, quality school systems, and available recreational activities.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston is home to many things that would make a wonderful place for a curious child to grow up. Boston’s health care has been one of the best in the country since 2006, and it’s famous for the Boston Children’s hospital, which has been ranked nationally in 10 pediatric areas. Boston is also home to some of the best public school systems in the nation with many of their high schools having a graduation rate of over 95%, and Boston University is one of the top ranked colleges in the country. Boston has been recognized nationally for having great after school programs for children as well. Between all the museums, beautiful parks, and the famous baseball stadium, there is a lot of historical enjoyment to get out of this wonderful city.

San Francisco, California

San Francisco is one of the few areas that feels as if several small towns were put together to form one big city. San Francisco would be a great place to expose any child to a wide level of diversity and increase their appreciation of different cultures. Chinatown has a completely different feel than Fisherman’s Warf does, and tourists visit every day from all areas of the world. The people of San Francisco are generally extremely friendly, and the city is great for bikers and walkers. There are many attractions to the Bay Area including the world renowned Golden Gate Bridge which would be great to bike with the kids on a weekend afternoon. The city is dedicated to improving the quality of the environment and has worked hard to put healthy food into public schools and encourage healthy recreational activities. The city created the Healthy San Francisco Program which is designed to provide affordable health care to uninsured residents.

Boise, Idaho

Boise is commonly known among its residents as “the best kept secret of the Northwest.” The downtown area is full of beautiful parks and various restaurants as well as a great public library that offers many free, fun, and educational activities for the youth. There are many quality public schools, and Boise State University is famous for their nationally ranked football team. Games are one of the best ways that the community gets together, and the tailgating parties are always a blast for young kids.  The city is extremely biker friendly with a city-wide greenbelt that goes along the Boise River, and it’s one of the few areas that can take you from the heart of downtown right up into gorgeous foothills in a matter of minutes.  Ranked number two on Forbes list of “Best Cities to Live”, Boise stands out for its low crime rates and family-friendly community atmosphere.

Portland, Oregon

Famous for its pure air quality and environmental awareness progression, Portland, Oregon is a great atmosphere to bring a child into. The people of Portland are generally friendly and laidback, and the city is known for being one of the most culturally accepting despite its smaller size.  The location is perfect for planning family trips; Portland is only a couple hours away from both great mountain camping spots as well as the coast. However, there are many recreational activities for the family right in the city as well. Portland is home to the Oregon Zoo (famous for its elephant rescue program) as well as many art and science museums. The city offers many family activities such as art programs and live music on the weekends.

Des Moines, Iowa

Iowa’s cost of living is lower than in most of the Unites States, and housing in Des Moines has been recognized for its affordability. The unemployment rate is lower than average due to a huge business success rate securing more job opportunities.  The city is home to top ranked public schools (as well as a high graduation rate), and the crime rates in Des Moines are extremely low. Amusement parks, museums, and zoos make recreation time with the kids easy, fun, and affordable. The art and culture scene is expanding, and many residents feel an increase in the sense of community.

Finding the right place to ensure that a child can grow up in a safe environment with adequate health care and a reasonable cost of living can be tough. However, there are many cities in the U.S. that help make family life affordable as well as allow for fun and everlasting memories to take place.
