Baby Shower Etiquette

When it comes to planning a baby shower, all the parts of the big party need to be well thought out. There are a few traditional rules for planning, but feel free to input your creative side, whenever possible.

First things first. The person throwing the party nowadays can be anyone close to the mother to be. This includes sisters, mothers, or even a co-worker. A group of close friends can also be the baby shower hostesses, therefore spreading around the responsibility of this big day for the new mom. The guest list should be gone over with the mom to be to make sure no one that she wants there is left out, unless of course, you are planning a surprise baby shower. Do not forget the food for a baby shower. No shower would be complete without finger sandwiches or baby items shaped into little treats. The theme for a baby shower can vary. If the due date is close to Halloween, why not have a costume themed shower. Utilize the time of year and the new mom’s favorite things to create the perfect theme.

Who Should Be Invited To The Baby Shower?

People who attended the couple’s wedding ceremony should be invited to the baby shower, but it is always advisable to consult first with the mother-to-be and the father-to-be in some cases, particularly if you are planning to invite him as well. Until some year ago, baby showers were “women only” events where men did not participate but times have changed.

Nowadays, not only the father-to-be is invited to the party, but every day more and more couples participate together in the baby showers. This fact is important for new parents because they both can be involved as the goes on, and the inclusion of men at the event is a growing trend and may bring more fun during the 2 hours in average that most showers last.

Who Pays For The Baby Shower?

When the eventual birth of the baby is announced, the good news spread fast and soon the persons closer to the mother-to-be come up with the idea to hold a baby shower. It is traditional that the person who plans the shower and invites the guests pays for the shower because this party is usually considered a gift for the mother-to-be, although there is nothing wrong with asking some of the guests for help with the cost, but never the mom-to-be.

On the other hand, when the hostess has planned the shower and is able to pay for the cost of the party, there might be some other guests willing to help in both, planning and co-hosting with you sharing the shower costs. Whether you receive a helping hand or if you are considering asking some guests to participate, try to be tactful when it comes to asking for money.

Where Should The Baby Shower Be Held?

Since anyone can plan a baby shower, either the friends of the mother-to-be or the couple, their family members, and/or co-workers, the place where the event will be held varies. Most of the times a mother-to-be has many different baby showers celebrate in different locations.

In any case, the general rule says that baby showers should be held in the home of the hostess, however not necessary because depending on the accessibility of the place they can be held elsewhere. This also applies when the baby shower is co-hosted and there are a number of people involved in the planning, in which case the shower is held in the home of the person who lives closer to the mother-to-be or the person who lives in the neighborhood that everyone is familiar with.
